Roof Maintenance

Replacing your roof is costly. Let’s keep it working instead.

In Alaska wind is hard on our roofs.

During our most recent two winters we have had hurricane force winds hit our homes. When the roof is covered in icy snow, this isn’t necessarily a problem. But when the winds hit after a melt that leaves the roofs bare, shingles start to fly. Even roofs that appear to weather the storm without damage are often left with hidden damage — weak and broken seal tabs that leave the roof vulnerable to massive failure the next time a strong wind blows through.

At Curiosity Builder, we focus on repair-first roofing. That means strengthening what you already have — not pushing a replacement before it’s necessary.

If your goal is to:

  • Prevent future wind damage

  • Extend the life of your roof

  • Avoid premature replacement

  • Protect against shingle blow-offs

You’re in the right place.

Why Wind Damages Roofs in Anchorage

Shingles are designed to seal themselves with factory adhesive strips. That works well in warm climates.

But in Anchorage:

  • We install roofs in cool weather.

  • Seal tabs don’t always activate fully.

  • Freeze/thaw cycles weaken adhesive.

  • Strong wind events test every shingle edge.

When a seal tab fails, wind can lift the shingle slightly. You may not notice it at first.

But lifted shingles lead to:

  • Creased shingles

  • Broken seal strips

  • Nail pull-through

  • Large scale shingle loss in the next windstorm

Most homeowners don’t realize there’s a problem until they see shingles in the yard.

What Is Hand Tabbing?

Hand tabbing is the process of manually applying roofing cement under individual shingles — sealing the shingles together.

When factory adhesive doesn’t activate or begins to fail we:

  • Check each shingle by hand

  • Lift shingles with broken or weak seals and apply the correct amount of roofing cement

  • Reseal the shingle securely to the course below

This dramatically increases wind resistance.

In a climate like Anchorage, hand tabbing a vulnerable roof can make the difference between:

  • Another 5-10 years of life for your roof

  • And losing half your shingles in the next windstorm

When Hand Tabbing Makes Sense

Consider getting your roof hand tabbed when:

  • Seal tabs are partially failing

  • You’ve had previous wind damage

  • You want to avoid a full replacement

  • You have three tab shingles

If you have never had issues with your roof, it makes sense to start checking your seal tabs when your roof is 20-30 years old. And it’s almost always a smart move to hand tab after repairing a few blown shingles — to prevent the next failure.

Why Curiosity Builder?

I have always loved to ask “why” and some of the most satisfying moments in my years of contracting have come when an understanding of “why” led to solving a problem that didn’t seem solvable. My curiosity drives me to seek the root cause of your ice dams, lost shingles, and attic condensation, so we can solve the root cause of the problem, often without needing to tear everything out and restart.

When you work with Curiosity Builder, you get thorough diagnostics, honest recommendations, and options aimed at actually solving your problems for the long term.
